There are many kinds of mood disorders. The most common mood disorders are Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia), and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). These mood disorders can significantly impact an individual’s daily function, self regulation, and overall well-being. Common symptoms differ in severity and frequency and may include persistent sadness, disinterest, loss of pleasure in activities, changes in appetite. change in sleep patterns, being easily irritable, and difficulty concentrating.
According to Ohio State University, self-esteem if the key determinant of whether you snap out of a bad mood or drown in it and form repetitive counterproductive behaviours, alienating others and putting up a wall to protect one’s vulnerabilities. IT is like the switch that determines whether you switch on a certain mood and stick with it or snap out of it and switch on a different mood. Research shows that visual perception, like seeing a certain scenario, for example, an image of a dying child or a photo of an awe inspiring waterfall, may induce a good, bad, or neutral mood or mind-set that is tied into the viewers subjectivities, including their perception of themselves and or their self-esteem. When researchers depicted a funny scene by a comedian, for example, or showed a child
receiving a diagnosis of cancer, subjects who had been induced into cheerful moods strove to sustain that cheerful mood. Subjects with a high self-esteem chose the videos deemed “happy.” On the contrary, in sad and neutral moods were less concerned with the happiness factor. They elected not to change their gloomy states of mind. Further research on a statistically significant sample revealed that the self-esteem factor was the switch. “People with high self-esteem in a negative mood do work very hard to retrieve a positive state,” says Petty, “while people with low self-esteem do the opposite.” They tend to perpetuate their melancholy by staying aboard a
negative train of thought.”
